Hi guys,
I don't know whether I should invest my minimal savings into the stock market or into a long-term saver. What are the benefits of both? Why should I steer clear of one and not the other? I've heard shares are super rewarding long term, but I also know I need to do a lot of research. Can you help me?
Thanks!

Hi Ruby,
You need to start with what you intend using this money for. If it's money you intend using for something in the shorter term (think less than 5 years) then you probably don't want to take the risk of investing in the stock market.
If on the other hand it's long term savings that you don't need & have other sources of income to survive then the stock market can be a very rewarding place to invest over the long term.
Regarding super you need to not think of this as the stock market. Super is just one way of holding your money where you can potentially pay less tax than if you had that same money in your own name. You can hold money in a term deposit in super, just like you can hold shares in super - regardless of what your money is invested in you could possibly be paying less tax.
Hope this helps, please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any other queries.

James

Hi Ruby,
James is correct, you must first be very clear on what you are trying to achieve with your investment. Whilst I'm not a financial adviser, I would suggest you try to build up about $20,000 in an online saver with someone like ING first and then look at other ways you could invest.
Shares can be rewarding but also very risky, so if it's 5-10 years you are investing for I would say look at shares but if you are likely to need the money in 3 years or less, safety is your best option.
Best of luck

Scott
