PS profileWelcome Phil

What service do you provide?

I’m a Senior Relationship Manager with Westpac Commercial Banking & consider my job to be helping all Australian businesses get stronger & to prosper and grow.

Name of Business?

Westpac Bank

Where are you located?

Tamworth, in northern NSW, AKA Country Music Capital of Australia.

How long have you been in the banking industry?

28 years+. I started straight out of year 12 & actually only joined the Bank while I was waiting for an auto-electrician’s apprenticeship to come up. Here we are 28 years later & I’m still waiting……….

Is there any particular part of your industry you specialise in?

You could call me a generalist, as I’ve worked in numerous different industries, including Agribusiness, Pubs & Clubs, Transport, Importing, Wholesaling, Education & the various professional sectors, ie. Real estate, Accountants & Solicitors.

What do you do for your customers that sets you apart from other experts in financial services?

I tend to be able to connect with people easily & make life easy for them. Having been in the role for a while, I have plenty of advocates who are willing to share their thoughts on how I do business with any potential clients. I also see any relationship as a partnership & talk a lot about what my client’s goals & aims are & how we can help them be achieved.

What role does communication play in helping you operate a successful business?

It’s very near to the top. I know I don’t like it when I have to wait too long for a reply & treat my clients the same way. We all want to be acknowledged & even if it just ‘I’ve got your message, but am tied up so is it OK if I get back to you tomorrow’ response, I will always get back to people on day 1. In particular, if there is stress in a business, people must communicate, communicate, communicate………..

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in business?

Always take the opportunity to check to if there are any issues in the business, no matter how small & take the time to fix them before they grow any bigger.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Always be good to your assistant, because one day they might be your Boss.

Is there a book you’d recommended to help people stay motivated?

There are plenty & it depends on what your motivations are at the time, so I couldn’t say any 1 in particular. What motivates me the most without a doubt though is my family.

What are your favourite hobbies?

Bike riding, trail running & spending time with my wife & two beautiful boys, albeit they have also just gotten me into Forza Horizons on the X-Box lately so it’s creeping up the list………
